Strictly speaking, R.E.M.’s hit “It’s the End of the World As We Know It” isn’t about
auditing — but it could easily serve as an anthem for many of today’s auditors as their profession teeters on the brink of unprecedented change.
Advanced technologies like artificial intelligence,
robotic process automation, and blockchain, along with the availability of vast pools of data, are ushering in a new era of audit, and a growing number of professionals are buckling in for the ride. The full impact has yet to be seen as technologies continue to evolve and gain traction, but several certainties have clearly emerged for
the audit of the future.

“I think this is really an exciting time to be part of the auditing profession,” said Karen Larsen, a partner at Chicago-based Top 15 Firm Baker Tilly. “For the first time in decades, I think we have a renewed sense of energy and a desire to transform auditing into a more modern-

Said Sue Coffey, executive vice president of public practice at the Association of International Certified Professional
Accountants, “I think there is an excitement that technology affords us the ability to modernize the audit — to look at the audit completely differently and kind of turn it on its head and really think about how we can do things really differently, how we can transform.”
To better serve clients and attract and retain talent as next-gen professionals increasingly enter the workforce, firms must understand how such technologies are reshaping the audit profession and the skill sets needed to keep pace.
